Midweek meetings

Our Midweek meetings are held on Wednesday evenings, from 7:45 to 9:00 pm, in members’ homes. We all gather together in one home, and the meetings consist of two prayer meetings per month, two Bible Studies per month, and periodic missionary meetings.

The leadership is shared among men in the church, and in this way we attempt to develop and benefit from the variety of gifts among us.

Prayer Meetings

We meet twice a month for prayer. There is a brief devotional from the Bible to turn our attention from the day’s activities to God. We devote the remainder of the time to prayer, focusing on a specific need (eg Mission, Evangelism, or National needs), and praying for the life of the church and the needs of the members.

Bible Studies

These are discussional Bible studies. As a general rule, we find that people are too tired in the middle of the week after a day’s work to concentrate on a lecture.

We tend to be systematic, and alternate between two approaches. One is to study a book of the Bible, with the leader prompting discussion by carefully prepared questions. The other is to pick up on one of the Sunday sermons, and to discuss it with a view to reinforcing its message, enlarging on the teaching, explaining what was unclear, drawing out the implications, and discussing practical applications.

Missionary Meetings

We like to increase our knowledge of the work of mission in the world, and to maintain contact with the missionaries we support. We therefore have periodic missionary meetings, which take on a variety of forms:

  • Visiting speakers who represent mission agencies tells us about the fields in which they work: eg UFM, Birmingham City Mission.
  • Repeat visits from missionaries whose work we are interested in and pray about: eg the Open Air Mission, European Missionary Fellowship
  • Visits from the missionaries whom we support and who have returned to the UK on home leave
  • Skype sessions in which we maintain regular contact with the missionaries we support
